Improving your sleep

A good night’s sleep is an absolute necessity to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Sleep enables our body to build and repair, reduces inflammation, improves attention and concentration, reduces stress levels, helps maintain a healthy weight, supports heart health, and strengthens our immune system. It also contributes to whether we can think clearly or not, whether we will live as long as we can, and whether or not we will suffer from dramatic age-related cognitive decline later in life.

Improving your sleep can be achieved with simple small changes, however, as with most simple solutions, it’s not always easy. Many things in our modern lives contribute to lack of sleep. Poor work/life balance, pregnancy and parenting, hormone fluctuations, alcohol and drugs, digestive issues, environmental stimuli, stress, pain and much more. And as you might have noticed lack of sleep can make some of those issues even worse, causing a downward spiral.

Of course, there will be times when you simply can’t get consistent sleep due to travel, shift work, social commitments, etc… Unfortunately, it is not enough to "catch up” on lost sleep, it needs to be a consistent habit, so when you miss that night here or there, you’ve saved up enough and can afford it.

The good news is there are a few tools you can use to improve your sleep, the ease with which you fall asleep, your ability to stay asleep, and the quality of the sleep you get.
